Abstract
As-designed building information modelling (BIM) often differ from the final construction, which significantly challenge the effectiveness of BIM models during the operation and maintenance (O&M) stage. Changes in BIM models are made mainly through manual updating or complete remodelling. Piping systems are among the most frequently changed mechanical, electrical, and plumbing system components. Previous studies have focused on identifying changes in piping systems by comparing as-designed and as-built BIM models of piping systems; however, this method still relies on manually updating BIM model changes, which is time-consuming and unreliable. This study aims to develop a novel approach to semi-automatically update the as-designed BIM for as-built BIM of piping systems based on point-cloud data. This approach is capable of updating the as-designed BIM for as-built BIM more efficiently and accurately. The findings can enrich the BIM updating taxonomy and fill the gap in locally updating as-designed BIM for as-built BIM.
